Seeking Depth: A Simple Petition

It all began, God, with you

Hovering over the deep and you,

Spirit of Calm, making sense

Of the depths.

God, I want to go deeper

Into your depth, where I

Know you and can sit

In the center of your presence like

Jonah in the great fish.

I long for depth in my

Allegiance to you and your kingdom

That I might do your will which

Is, after all, my purpose for living.

I pray for depth, O God.

Remove from me the shallows and

The empty, low-tide faith that

Allows me to keep my head above and

Fools me into thinking I'm in far enough.

Spirit, I give you more to work with, so

Please, give me depth.
