Like Lightning: A Prayer of Praise

Like lightning, flashing across the horizon,
illuminating the darkness and revealing
what appears to be roots hidden and embedded
in the canvas of the rumbling heavenlies,
you, O God, have crashed and roared and
thundered and struck upon my life.
You have exposed my roots against
the backdrop of such storms. Repeatedly.
The birds have flown for cover, the people
have sought out shelter, but the clouds
have gathered together for a moment,
inched toward you, then vanished, giving way
to drizzle and haze and light. I see, unobstructed.
In the storm, I’m gathered to you. Hallelujah that
you, O God, have crashed and roared and
thundered and struck upon my life.
